The Breeding Atlas

Précis of Fieldworker Instructions

This is simply an overview of the instructions. Those wishing to contribute should study the main document before proceeding

Please be sure that you have clearly identified your tetrad. It is best to contact the organiser and get a photocopy of the tetrad(s) that you wish to visit.

The Prime Aims of the Survey

1. To record the species within each tetrad

When: The fieldwork period is 1 April – 30 June

How: Simply record the species seen within the tetrad and using the habitat during the fieldwork period.

Birds need not be counted, but a recorder may encounter certain species where they consider that a count may be useful or worthwhile in the sense that it may represent a significant proportion of the total number within the tetrad.

There is no time limit for this part of the survey.

2. To prove breeding

When: At any time

How: Refer to the table of codes within the full instructions.

3. To make an estimate of the population of each species in each tetrad

When: The fieldwork period is 1 April – 30 June.

How: Visit each tetrad for exactly 2 hours between 1 April and 30 June inclusive. This may be made up by either:

i) two one hour visits, one being in the period 1 April – 15 May and the other in the period 16 May – 30 June; or
ii) one two hour visit in the period 16 May – 20 June; or
iii) a single one hour visit in the period 16 May – 20 June coupled with an additional visit of at least one hour at any time during the same period.

Refer to the full instructions for details, but you may not start later than 4 hours after local dawn.

Record all the birds which you encounter in your timed walk(s) that are within the tetrad and using the habitat.

Please contact us if you wish to take part.
