Atlas of the Land and Freshwater
Molluscs of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with drawings
of the species
By Stella M Turk, Hazel M Meredith and Geraldine
A Holyoak
The Atlas of The land and freshwater molluscs of Cornwall
and the Isles of Scilly provides the first detailed account
of the slug, snail and mussel species found within Cornwall
and the Isles of Scilly. Detailed maps and illustrations (as
an aid to identification) are given for the majority of species,
along with a brief description of the habitats in which they
occur.

About 130 different species of non-marine molluscs have been
recorded for Cornwall, with over half of these being very
rare in the County. Species include the Green Snail Ponentina
subvirescens, which is restricted to the coastal areas
of south-west Britain; the Round-mouthed Snail Pomatias
elegans which, unusually, is found amongst the sand dunes
of the north Cornish coast; and the Ash-black Slug Limax
cinereoniger, a species typical of ancient woodland.
The Isles of Scilly, however, as might be expected, only have
60 species due to their small size, restriction of habitats
and isolation.
The Atlas is available from the Environmental Records Centre
for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS) or on-line from
the Corwall
Wildlife Trust at the reduced price of £10 each
including postage and packing.
