ERCCIS Annual Review 2003
The Annual Review 2003 details the work undertaken
by the Records Centre during 2003. It covers our core
work – working with recorders and recording groups;
collating data about Cornwall and Scilly’s wildlife
and earth heritage; using computers to manage information;
and operating the Wildlife Information Service to provide
information to the hundreds of individuals and organisations
requiring it.
It also tells of the various projects the Records Centre
has been involved with throughout the year, such as
surveying coastal and floodplain grazing marsh and roadside
sites; reporting on Cornwall’s biodiversity (the
WOW! Project) and recording and raising awareness of
Cornish mammal species (Celebrating Cornwall’s
Mammals – from dormice to dolphins!).

A preliminary Brown Hare distribution
survey of Cornwall, with reference to introductions.
By Derek Lord in collaboration with Cornwall
FWAG (2001) |
What started as a brief note on the distribution of the Brown
Hare Lepus europaeus in the county, has developed
into a useful starting point for a long overdue, more thorough
survey of this species’ status in Cornwall. The study
is based on data collected from Cornwall FWAG (Farming and
Wildlife Advisory Group), as a by-product of a Stoat Mustela
erminea and Weasel Mustela nivalis Survey, for
the period 1994 to 1997. The results estimate the amount of
farmland occupied by Brown Hares and the number of sub-populations
in the county.

Bass Investigations in
the Fal and Helford Estuaries Complexes 2001.
Including previous study notes and surveys on Bass in
the Fal Estuary by DF Kelley and the late JP Bridger.

Sea-Bass Dicentrarchus labrax for over 20 years and
has been netting on the Helford for the last nine. This paper
primarily reports on the sampling of the Fal and Helford during
2001 but also contains notes about the previous surveys of
Donovan Kelley and the late John Bridger dating back to 1983
(given in the appendices).

No 3: A solitary mining
bee Andrena hattorfiana at Gwithian Towans.
By ECM Haes |
A small population of this striking-looking, dark, solitary
mining bee Andrena hattorfiana, has been monitored
almost annually on the calcareous sand dunes at Gwithian (SW580408)
since its presence here was confirmed by George Else in the
hot summer of 1989. This paper outlines the fortunes of the
population at Gwithian, as well as detailing the other currently
known colonies of this nationally rare (Red Data Book - Vulnerable)
species.
