"The NBN Gateway is a web-based tool developed to help any organisation share the wildlife resources they hold with others. The NBN Gateway provides a single point of access over the internet to wildlife information held by a wide range of organisations and groups. The website provides a secure environment in which data providers can manage how they share their data."
ERCCIS has submitted the following datasets to the NBN Gateway which are available to view by members of the public at set resolutions. Each dataset has metadata which describes the data.
As an example, the Carnivora species distribution dataset contains 9,030 records from 5,043 recorded sites in Cornwall and covers six different species. These species are American mink (Mustela vison), Eurasian badger (Meles meles), European otter (Lutra lutra), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), stoat (Mustela erminea) and weasel (Mustela nivalis).
For each dataset that is submitted, the NBN Gateway automatically produces helpful temporal and geographical statistics, maps and graphs.
The NBN Gateway has a number of useful tools for exploring UK biodiversity data. An example of one of these tools is the interactive map. The interactive map allows users to view species records with a range of overlays and backgrounds, zoom in to records and get information about them. The following map shows the European otter (Lutra lutra) records from the Carnivora dataset in Cornwall. There are no otters on the Isles of Scilly. The green squares show the records at a resolution of 2 km square.
