ERCCIS runs workshops to inform and educate.
If you require further information, or have any suggestions
for future workshops or field trips, please contact the Information
Co-ordinator at the Records Centre Wildlife Information Service

As examples of past workshops in 2006 we ran the following, deatils of current events are available to download from our downloads section.
Freshwater Invertebrate Day
Date Tuesday 25th April 2006
Location South Penquite Farm, Blisland
Leaders Mrs Sally Foster, Prof Phillip Corbet, Dr Sarah
Corbet and Mrs Geraldine Holyoak
Cost No charge
Level Intermediate to Advanced
This day will concentrate on two ponds and a river habitat
to investigate the different assemblages of aquatic invertebrates,
with special reference to water beetles, freshwater molluscs,
Odonata (dragonfly and damselfly) larvae and Trichoptera
(caddisfly). Identification will be to species level where
possible. Some smaller species that require microscopic examination
will be keyed out after lunch in the Education Room and then
returned to their habitat. Thirty seven species of water
beetles have recently been recorded from the wetlands at
South Penquite Farm including the Delank River. The morning
fieldwork session will include surveying the Delank River
at Delford Bridge, a good habitat for caddisfly larvae.
Algae Workshop
Date Friday 28th and Saturday 29th April 2006
Location Falmouth
Leaders Dr Juliet Brodie and Dr.Pamela Tompsett
Cost No charge
Level Intermediate to Advanced
Friday will be spent exploring the coast around Falmouth
for the many types of marine algae (seaweed) found. Saturday
will be spent identifying specimens collected in the laboratory
of Cornwall University Campus, Tremough. Although
new pupils are welcome, this workshop is also intended as
a follow up to last year’s very popular workshop.
Cornwall Invertebrate Group Field meeting
Date Tuesday 30th May 2006
Location Boconnoc Estate, Lostwithiel
Leaders Mr Ian Bennallick and Mrs Sue Scott
Cost No charge
Level Beginner to Advanced
Cornwall invertebrate group is an informal group for all
interested in invertebrate life in Cornwall. We organise
a series
of field trips from late Spring to early Autumn with recording
our main aim. This visit to Boconnoc is a rare opportunity
to explore the parkland on the estate. A must for deadwood
invertebrate enthusiasts.
Use of the Microscope Workshop
Date Saturday 17th June 2006
Location Trevenson House, Camborne College, Pool
Leader Kernow Microscopical Society
Cost No charge
Level Beginner
ERCCIS have teamed up with Kernow Microscopical Society
to provide a useful insight into the use of the
microscope as an aid in identification for recording purposes.
So if you have ever used a microscope and
wondered if you are getting the most out of it or if you
have never used one before (or at least not since school
days), then this is the workshop for you.
Cornwall Invertebrate Group Field Meeting
Date Wednesday 28th June 2006
Location Dunmere Wood
Leader Mrs Sue Scott and Mr Ian Bennallick
Cost No charge
Level Beginner to Advanced
Another chance to join the Cornwall Invertebrate Group on
a recording trip, this time to the Forestry Commission’s
Dunmere Wood. This site has a wealth of interesting old records
so we will be looking to bring these up to date and
hopefully find new species.
Habitat Workshop -Phase One Surveying
Date Thursday 13th July 2006
Location Cornwall Wildlife Trust headquarters, Allet
Leader Dr John Gowenlock
Cost No charge
Level Beginner to Intermediate
A valuable introduction to the national habitat classification
system led by an experienced ecological consultant.
The aim of the workshop is to pass on and consolidate the
skills required to describe habitat types using nationally
recognised terminology. Useful to add even more value to
your species records or to annotate your field trips with
JNCC habitat information. We will be visiting Bissoe Valley
in the afternoon to practice our new skills on the
range of habitats found there.
Plant Gall Walk
Date Saturday 22nd July 2006
Location Godolphin Estate, Near Helston
Leader MrsElizabeth Jackson and Mr Ian Bennallick
Cost No charge
Level Beginner to Intermediate
A joint ERCCIS/Camborne and Redruth
Natural History Society meeting. A walk
around the Godolphin estate with Elizabeth Jackson, the county
recorder for plant
galls, to find and identify the fantastic variety of galls
found on all types of plants.
Cornwall Invertebrate Group Field Meeting
Date Saturday 23rd August 2006
Location Millook Woods, Near Bude
Leader Mr Ian Bennallick and Mrs Sue Scott
Cost No charge
Level Beginner to Advanced
This is part of an extensive range of valley woodlands up
on the far north coast of Cornwall. This mixed broadleaf
woodland is relatively sheltered and wet towards the valley
bottoms and should be of particular interest to
Lepidopterists. We will also be looking at some south facing
fields managed for their conservation interest. If we
have the time and any energy left we will walk down to Millook
Haven.
Ladybird Identification Workshop
Date
Saturday 9th September 2006
Location Duchy College, Rosewarne
Leader Dr Keith Alexander
Cost No charge
Level Intermediate
While ladybirds tend to be very popular with naturalists
they are not all easy to identify. This workshop will cover
the range of species likely to be found in Cornwall, introduce
recorders to their identification, and discuss their
habitat associations and how to find them. Coaching in identification
will, however, be the main focus.
Myriapod Identification Workshop
Date Saturday 7th October 2006
Location Duchy College, Rosewarne
Leader Dr Tony Barber
Cost No charge
Level Beginner
There is a recent report from Venezuela of giant centipedes
climbing up on to the roof of a cave and capturing bats for
food. Fortunately, perhaps, we do not have anything quite
like that in Cornwall but nevertheless our much smaller
centipedes and millipedes make an interesting study themselves.
Not being able to fly like insects or parachute like
some spiders, they must rely on their own many feet or on
human activity or some other chance factor to disperse them
and their geographical distribution contains many puzzles.
There are only about fifty species of each group in Britain,
some are very distinctive and easy to identify, others a
little less so but this workshop tries to introduce you to
the two
groups, how to study them and what help and support is available.
Wildlife recorders forum
The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Federation of Biological
Recorders and the Environmental
Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have
organised a joint Wildlife recorders forum - 'Practical wildlife
recording in the field - methods and equipment' on Saturday
20th January 2007, 10am - 4pm at Fraddon Village
Hall, near Indian Queens, SW910578.
Following a successful wildlife recorders forum held in
2005, which focussed on the future of wildlife recording
in Cornwall, this one will focus on the practicalities of
wildlife recording in the field in Cornwall. The day will
also be a chance to meet up with recorders and representatives
of local wildlife recording groups, find out what they do
and what equipment they use (with cheaper alternatives suggested)
and the time-saving or accepted methodologies they recommend.
